(The first part of this post is just to keep in mind for later) The first weekend we got here, we went to a club called “Crystal”. Just to jog your memory, it was the one where the girls wore band-aids for dresses and stripper shoes. Okay, now that we have that sorted out, I can get on with the real story. The music they played was basically all euro-trance/techno music with the same beating base. The next morning Tim did a hilarious impression of this one particular euro-trance/techno song. Ever since this impression we have been desperately trying to find out the name of this song so we can download it and make fun of it some more...but of course, no such luck. After 3-4 weeks of searching I began to think Tim made this beat/sound up in his head to sound like a combination of all the different techno/euro-trance songs we have heard.
Thursday night we ventured to “On Anon”, a touristy bar with a £7 cover ($11.29). After getting over the fact that I had just paid $11.29 to get in, I was able to buy a £3 drink (which isn’t that bad). We met some guys Caroline and Emily met earlier at a Chinese restaurant after “Zoo Bar” last weekend from Oklahoma that also have internships in London (small world). There were also tons of EUSA people there so it was fun to meet and greet.
Friday morning, we all collaborated and decided that going to class in a non air-conditioned room in 85 degree and humid weather was the second to last thing we would want to do, going to work was the last. After a riveting class on “Trends in Business” (considering I just finished a 50 slide presentation on trends for work, this was one of the more boring classes) we headed to the Angel area for Chipotle type food (which was fantastic) and then to a pub to watch the Roddick vs. Murray Wimbledon match. Molly, our friend from KU, and some of her other program buddies (she is doing the same internship program in Dublin) decided to visit London for the weekend. She planned on arriving around 2:00 PM so we decided to meet up her and her friends for dinner at our now favourite Indian restaurant “Angel Curry Centre.” After dinner we went to a bar/club in Leicester Square called “Metra.” (Here is where the beginning of this post comes into play) As soon as we reluctantly paid our £10 cover, we stepped inside and immediately heard what we thought was the song! Tim’s face was priceless when he realized the thumping beat, like a little boy on Christmas. We looked around for anyone to ask the pending question “what is this song?!” The door lady, laughing, said “Put Your Hands Up for Detroit.” Needless to say, the boys found it on YouTube the next day and played it on repeat for hours.
Saturday we headed back to Portobello Market for gifts and food (I might have bought a special birthday gift for someone...). Erin and I bought very authentic crepes with ham and cheese (they were amazing). I started to feel a little homesick before dinner, due to the fact that 4th of July may be my favourite holiday, and I was in the worst place to celebrate. We headed back to Angel to a place called Wagamama’s for dinner. I was exhausted after dinner so I went to bed early to save my energy for the Kanye West concert Sunday!
Sunday, Erin and I woke up and grabbed brunch at a cute cafe in King’s Cross called Comino. The group met at Nido and then we headed down to Hyde Park for the much anticipated Kanye West concert! We began walking towards the tube and noticed the tube was closed, which is rare in King’s Cross. We then noticed 5-10 emergency vehicles gathered in the nearest intersection. As we approached the cluster of people and chaos we noticed people had their camera’s out taking pictures! As we turned the corner we saw a big red helicopter sitting in the middle of King’s Cross’ biggest intersection! After asking several people what was going on, we discovered someone had thrown themselves onto the Piccadilly line track at King’s Cross. Of course this was the line we needed to take to get to Hyde Park. We were so close to the helicopter we could see the IV they were putting into the man! It was very eerie. We stayed and watched the helicopter take off and fly the suicide survivor to the hospital. Definitely not how we were expecting to start
our day. After eventually reaching Hyde Park, we picked up our tickets at the box office and then headed into the concert. There was a main stage right in the middle and then two or three smaller stages in tents around the main stage. Food vendors lined up around the perimeter of the venue. There was a fenced in area with picnic tables for people to sit and eat at and at least 200 port-a-potties. It was generously set up. When we arrived Young Jeezy was performing on the main stage. Next we headed over to a smaller tent to watch Rat-tat-tat, and then to another small tent after that to watch Kid Cudi. It was all just a huge build up for the main performer Kanye West who was due to perform at 9:40 PM. We headed over to the main stage around 5:30PM to watch Q-tip, the performance before Kanye, to guarantee us a good view. We ended up being around 10 rows from the front for Kanye. There was a point where I thought I was going to die from the swaying crowd the the beer bottles being thrown left and right, but we survived and Kanye was amazing. The stage had a huge silver back drop and several different silver pieces. In the middle of his show 4 naked women painted completely gold came onto stage and posed around him while he sang (this would probably only happen in Europe). His last song was stronger and it was perfect to end on. It was absolutely amazing. Definitely one of the top 3 concerts I have ever been to. After a long day of concert going we headed back to Nido dehydrated and exhausted and went to bed. A great weekend and more to come in the following 2 weeks!!!
